Oven-Baked BBQ Ribs with Homemade BBQ Sauce
These oven-baked BBQ ribs are slow-cooked until tender, then finished with a sticky homemade BBQ sauce for a rich, smoky flavor. Perfect for a hearty family meal or casual gathering, they deliver classic barbecue taste without the need for a grill.
Ingredients
For the Ribs
- 2 to 3 lb pork baby back ribs or spare ribs
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
For the homemade BBQ Sauce
- 1 cup ketchup
- ⅓ cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt to taste
Instructions
Prepare the ribs:
- Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C). Remove the thin membrane from the back of the ribs for better tenderness. Rub the ribs with olive oil, then season evenly with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Bake low and slow
- Place the ribs on a baking sheet lined with foil. Cover tightly with another layer of foil to trap moisture. Bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until the ribs are very tender and the meat easily pulls away from the bone.
Make the BBQ sauce
- While the ribs are baking, combine all BBQ sauce ingredients in a saucepan. Cook over medium-low heat for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring often, until the sauce thickens slightly. Taste and adjust sweetness, salt, or spice as needed.
Glaze the finish
- Remove the ribs from the oven and carefully uncover them. Increase oven temperature to 425°F (220°C). Brush the ribs generously with the homemade BBQ sauce. Return to the oven uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes, until the sauce is sticky and lightly caramelized.
Rest and serve
- Let the ribs rest for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve with extra BBQ sauce on the side.
Serving Tips
- These ribs pair well with coleslaw, baked beans, corn on the cob, or oven-roasted potatoes. For extra flavor, finish with a quick broil for 2 to 3 minutes, keeping a close eye to avoid burning.
